This item is an original document, dated December 1776, Rye, New York, where Hachaliah Brown has signed a land transfer to his sons Josiah and Isaac, for a farm and other land in Rye....signed on back by Hachaliah Brown, Philip Pell Jr., and Gilbert Brown. Document is 8x12, acid free tape repairs done on full splits along fold lines. A blank section originally attached as a blank second page to the document, bears a scarce watermark of LIBERTY. See scans for details.Hacaliah Brown (1695-1780), On 30 April 1739, Lieut. Gov. George Clarke commanded the Province of New York's Attorney General to issue a patent to Captain John Budd, Hachaliah Brown and Jonathan Brown to operate a ferry between Rye to Oyster Bay. He was called major in 1752, and was justice in 1755. In 1756, says Mr. Bolton, he commanded the Westchester levie under General Lord Amherst.
