A rare original eight page manuscript Connecticut Treasury Office financial account of Continental Army pay notes redeemed by Boston merchant JOSEPH BARRELL [1739-1804] owner of several Revolutionary War privateers and soon to be a member of the board of the newly established Bank of the United States. The Treasury Office of the State issued certificates of these promissory notes to members of the Continental Army [Army Notes] when they could not pay cash during the Revolutionary War. Many soldiers in need of money sold these notes to rich speculators like Barrell in years before rdemption dates.
