Description
INFO.THAT CAME WITH ITEM WHEN ADDED TO OUR MUSEUM: “
Up for auction is an
antique 18th Century
wooden canteen/rum keg
🇺🇸
. It has
hand-hammered iron hoops
and a
wooden peg
in lieu of a cork. The handle is made of leather. Eight inches (20⅓ cm) long, it has a diameter of about 5¾” (14½ cm) at its widest part and is 5” (12¾ cm) in diameter at the end. By sight, it holds ½ gallon, maybe ¾ gallons of liquid.
I’m dating this by a note taped onto the canteen (You can see it in the pictures.) which says
Barrel-shaped wooden rum keg or canteen with four hand-hammered iron hoops, circa 1770
. This is from the estate of the owner of a shop which dealed (sic) in antique but especially historical goods.
This is doing very well for a wooden canteen or keg that is almost 250 years-old. One hoop is loose but is holding. The wooden staves are slightly chipped on one end of the keg. The leather handle is in surprising shape. Lightly scratched onto one of the ends of the barrel is
1776
.

At age 70 the grand kids have told me that they have no interest in any of the collections in the family’s traveling museum-- MOCAPA. A bit disappointing to hear but well understood in the 21st century. Plus, for me, collecting lacks the attraction that it had in years past as well as the steward collectors. Thanks, joe
