Franz Schubert's last 14 songs, collected as a cycle entitled Schwanengesang, include some of his greatest and most popular lieder-among them, "Der Atlas," "Standchen," "Die Stadt," and "Doppelganger." This valuable volume-source materials relating to Schwanengesang. The book features a facsimile of the composer's autograph score (now held by the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York). Schubert's extant sketches for 3 songs, and a reproduction of the rare and authoritative first edition issued in Vienna in 1829 by Schubert's publisher, within 6 months of the composer's death. Martin Chusid's enlightening introduction provides the history and physical description of each of the sources along with information about Schwanengesang's first publisher, Tobias Haslinger.
