    , and served as the first United States Secretary of the Treasury.  In July 1804, sitting Vice President Aaron Burr, stung by a published criticism authored by Hamilton, challenged the esteemed statesman to a duel and fatally wounded him.

    Rare two issues of
    The Balance, and Columbian Repository
    covering the death of Alexander Hamilton at the hands of Aaron Burr in Weehawken, New Jersey.  July 17 and 31, 1804 editions, published in Hudson, New York, contains eight pages each, measures 10.75 by 8.5 inches, and in fine condition with minor staining and some chipping at edges.  The 17 July issue contains “breaking news” of Hamilton’s death with black “mourning rules” in memory of Hamilton and a tombstone woodcut engraving on page 3.  The 31 July issue contains “black mourning rules” on each page and is devoted to Hamilton’s funeral oration, the correspondence between Burr and Hamilton that led to the duel, Hamilton’s last will and testament, and a poem on Hamilton’s grave.
