Description
Offered in this 7-day auction is a c.1770-1800 Naval Fire Bucket. This bucket is heavy leather and thoroughly riveted throughout in copper. Retains its original copper band at top which would have also secured the original handle. These buckets are scarce to find. This particular bucket is rough, but representative. What is left is sturdy and substantial, displaying well. Buckets such as these were kept aboard ship to put out small fires, as needed. I've included a couple of photos from what the bucket would look like "complete" and aboard ship. There would've been many of these on a ship placed throughout for easy access. Of course, they were often lost at sea with a sunk ship. The examples I've included are painted "GR" for George Rex. Mine offered, is an unmarked example, likely for a Colonial ship or even a merchant ship. This comes from a prominent, but private nautical collection in the Charleston, South Carolina area.Measures 9 3/4" tall. 10" diameter at top. 6" base diameter.
Low starting bid. No reserve. Thank you for looking!
