    Description

Original and Authentic Revolutionary War Soldier Letter Written At Valley Forge Dated February 17, 1778***RARE***. I'm reluctantly parting with this piece, which has been the centerpiece of my Revolutionary War collection for many years. I'm slowly parting with my collection and I'm starting with one of my best pieces.
The letter was found in an attic in New Jersey of an old colonial home and sold at an estate sale. The left side of the letter was damaged in the attic during many years of storage presumably by water or rodents. There is 1 word missing from the left side of a few sentences. I have the history of the soldier. His name was James Whitehead. He was a 16 year old drummer boy with Washington's New Jersey regiment. Letter mostly discusses his wish for supplies and to find a suitable woman some day and is addressed to his father. I will send the enlistment records to the buyer that I obtained with the piece. Best of luck!
Letter transcription below to the best of my ability:
Camp Valley Forge                   February 17, 1778
    Dearest Father:
I have received you letters of the 20th and 22nd. I have expectations to be (  ) home by April. I find myself without adequate clothing of conditions fit for a prisoner, thief  (  ). If you see to send  ( ) stackings of wood, chocolate and sugar. Camp has made me unwell but with these few ( ) articles my spirits would be raised and I would surely write more often without excuse.
Don't think too long on Abigail, ......Francis White is a fine man for her. I will find a wife when I am to do and apply myself to the noble art of courtship. She will be a as fine a woman that ever was such as mother was to us and William.
    Forever your obedient son,
    James
