Spreading Joy Through Nature & Wildlife
    Our story
    How we got our start?
Wakefield Peanut Company began more than 150 years ago when the first commercial peanut crop in the United States was grown a few miles west of our location. For over 40 years, our family-owned business in Wakefield, Virginia, has produced some of the finest peanuts and animal shelters available.
    What makes our product unique?
All of our animal shelters are hand-crafted using sustainably-grown Eastern White Pine Wood. Eastern White Pine is an ideal material for our houses & feeders because it provides superior insulation during the summer and winter months while remaining light in weight and easy to hang.
Why we love what we do?
Our passion stems from our upbringing. We are farmers. We are builders. We are wildlife enthusiasts. And we enjoy the simpler things in life. We love animals and we spread happiness.

Benefits of Providing a Squirrel House
Squirrels live in various forests, preferring hardwoods or mixed woods, especially those with nut trees.
This little fellow is a year-round resident seen mostly in the morning and evening in the yard. Most squirrels feed primarily on nuts, especially peanuts, hickory nuts, acorns, beech nuts and walnuts. They also like fruit, maple seeds, tulip tree seeds and corn as well.

    Year-Round Housing for the Squirrels
And Hours of Entertainment for Your Family!
Squirrels are one of the most popular backyard animals and are well-known for providing hours of entertainment through their silly antics. Providing squirrels with a Wakefield Squirrel House will help keep them in your yard year-round, especially when paired with a Wakefield Peanut Feeder. Put out some Wakefield peanuts and enjoy watching the feeding frenzy that ensues!
Peanuts are a high energy food source with protein and essential fatty acids. They are a great supplement to squirrel diets.
Squirrels have very acute senses. Their vision enables one squirrel to distinguish another from 50 feet away.
Squirrels have two peak times of activity during the day: early morning and mid-afternoon. In the winter they are active around noontime.
Squirrels can bury up to 25 nuts an hour. This is a communal activity with squirrels in the area benefiting from the buried food supply.
A squirrel will eat its entire body weight in food each week (1 to 1-1/2 lbs).
    Squirrel House Features
Made of Eastern White Pine Wood
Wakefield premium squirrel feeders are hand-crafted in the USA and made of only the finest, sustainably-grown Eastern White Pine Wood. Eastern White Pine is an ideal material for squirrel feeders because it is light in weight and easy to hang.
This house is made of one-inch thick wood, which provides insulation from both heat and cold, which is one of the leading causes of death amongst baby squirrels.
    Rough-Sawn Wood
The White Pine used in the Wakefield Squirrel House is custom milled with a “rougher head” finish, which allows the baby squirrels to easily climb out of the nest when they are ready. a foothold when they are ready to climb out of the nest.
    Ventilation & Drainage
Ventilation is provided at the top of each side. Drainage is provided at each of the bottom corners. The right side tilts out from the bottom for easy cleaning, after each nesting season, typically spring and fall. A latch at the bottom of the panel holds it securely closed.
Keep Squirrels Out of Your Bird Feeder
No one likes it when those pesky squirrels steal all the food from the bird feeder and chase away the other animals. Giving squirrels their own dedicated house & feeder on the opposite side of the yard from the birdfeeders can help keep them away.
Placing a bird feeder in a tree is like inviting the squirrel to lunch. A squirrel can jump 6 feet vertically, can jump across 8 feet from one tree to another, and can climb up almost any surface except glass. So to keep them from the birdseed, place a birdfeeder away from trees and other surfaces the squirrel can climb. A pole in the middle of the yard, with a squirrel baffle on the pole and a bird feeder designed to discourage the squirrels, is about as squirrel-resistant as you can get. Then put a few Wakefield squirrel houses and squirrel feeders in the trees away from the bird feeding area, and you will enjoy all varieties of wildlife in your backyard. Feeding the squirrels year round helps to keep the out of the garden as well.
    Easy Mounting
Squirrels will use the house for nesting, as well as for protection from the winter elements. Mount the house on a tree, as high as you can comfortably reach with a ladder, preferably away from your birdhouses and feeders. On the back panel of the house is a metal hanger at the top and a pre-drilled hole at the bottom. Put a nail or screw into a tree or post, leaving the head sticking out by about 1/4”. Place the metal hanger over the nail or screw. Put another nail or screw through the pre-drilled hole at the bottom of the back panel, to fasten the house securely to the tree or post.
Paint or stain is not necessary. Over time, the wood will darken, grey, and attain a weathered patina, much like barn board. Wildlife ultimately prefer an inconspicuous nesting sight. Should you wish to paint or stain, use water-based products only, on the outside of the house only and not too dark a color, to prevent excess heat absorption in summer.
